Back in 2010, Ke$ha was waking up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy and brushing her teeth with a bottle of Jack, and by 2012 she was still feeling like a Crazy Kid. Fast forward two more years to 2014, and a 27-year-old Kesha (the $ has been removed) is stronger than ever, without her armor of face paint and glitter. In fact, as you can see on her new August Teen Vogue cover, underneath it all the freckled, blue-eyed beauty is quite the stunner.
The disappearance of her signature $ isn’t the only thing about Kesha that’s changed since her explosive debut five years ago. In her cover interview with Teen Vogue, she discusses her new pared down look–less glitter, more inner glamour–saying, “The insanity is not gone forever; it’s still there. I’ve only decided to wipe off all the face paint and try to wear beautiful dresses instead of completely insane things. I want to be more conscious of fashion because it’s an art form.”
She also talked about her time in rehab, which she insists wasn’t drug-related, but was rather an attempt to deal with a long-standing eating disorder, “nothing more, nothing less.” The pressures of the media spotlight apparently really got to her, as they do everyone under such scrutiny, and she told Teen Vogue that for a long time that she didn’t even want to be called pretty. “If somebody called me that, it was almost offensive—I would put on more eyeliner or draw things down my face. There was a defining moment about six months ago—I think it was a breakup—where I decided that maybe I do want to try to be pretty—I want to just try.”
Well her attempt is certainly working; she’s literally never looked prettier than she does in this new shoot. The rocker chic vibes and retro 70s style inspiration do Kesha’s new aesthetic well. Now that she’s looking better and feeling stronger than ever after her rehab stint (where she was able to write 14 new songs), Kesha has a whole lot to look forward to, including her duties as one of the judges on “Rising Star.” We can’t wait to see what’s next.
